The 3x15 badminton scoring system explained: every rule from 2027
The 3x15 badminton scoring system starts on 4 January 2027: games to 15, two clear at 14-all, capped at 21, interval at 8. Every rule, plus what it means for clubs.
From Monday 4 January 2027, a badminton game is won at 15 points, not 21. The 3x15 badminton scoring system was approved by BWF’s member associations at the 87th Annual General Meeting in Horsens, Denmark, on 25 April 2026, by 198 votes to 43, comfortably past the two-thirds majority a change to the Laws needs. Everything below is the rule set BWF published the next day, plus what it means for you, your club and your league, and how the sport got here.

What changes under 3x15
The headline is simple: 15 instead of 21. The detail is where club nights go wrong, so here it is in full.
| Rule | 3x21 (until 3 January 2027) | 3x15 (from 4 January 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| Points to win a game | 21 | 15 |
| Two-point lead needed from | 20-all | 14-all |
| Cap (next point wins) | 29-all, game ends at 30 | 20-all, game ends at 21 |
| Mid-game interval | When the leading score reaches 11 | When the leading score reaches 8 |
| Change of ends in the third game | When the leading score reaches 11 | When the leading score reaches 8 |
| Games per match | Best of three | Best of three |
| Scoring method | Rally point | Rally point |
So a game can finish 15-13 or 17-15 or 21-20, but never 22-20. The extension window is the same six points it is now (20 to 26 under 3x21, 14 to 20 under 3x15); it just arrives sooner.
The extension rule at 14-all
At 14-all you keep playing until one side leads by two: 16-14, 17-15, 18-16, 19-17, 20-18. If it reaches 20-all, the side that wins the next rally wins the game 21-20. The cap at 21 is the reason BWF called the system “3x15 with setting to 21” in its Council proposal to the 2026 AGM. A game cannot go past 21 points.
Intervals and ends
The 60-second break inside a game now comes when either side first reaches 8 points. The 120-second break between games does not change. In a deciding third game, you change ends when the leading score reaches 8, and the interval is taken at the same time. If you forget to change ends, swap as soon as the shuttle is dead and keep the score, exactly as now (Law 8.2).
What stays the same
Most of the Laws of Badminton are untouched. Rally-point scoring stays: whoever wins the rally wins the point, serving or not. Matches stay best of three games. The side that wins a game serves first in the next one. Serving rules do not change at all: even score, serve from the right; odd score, serve from the left; the 1.15 m height limit (or the waist rule where there is no measuring device) applies as before. If your serve is the weak point, how to serve in badminton covers the technique and the legal limits. Court dimensions, faults, lets and the doubles rotation are all unchanged.
Scoring calls change only in the numbers. The server’s score is still announced first.
Why BWF made the change
BWF’s case, set out in the Council proposal above, rests on match data from the World Tour and Major Championships between 2014 and 2024 and on trials run through 2025 at Continental Championships, Grade 3 international events, national leagues and national championships. The arguments: shorter games produce more close finishes and more decisive points per hour; match lengths become shorter and more predictable, which helps scheduling and broadcasters; and players, umpires and line judges carry less fatigue across a tournament week. Not everyone on the tour agrees, and several players said so publicly in the days after the vote, but the membership did.
What it means for players and clubs
Tour and international events. From 4 January 2027 every BWF-sanctioned tournament uses 3x15. The World Tour Finals in Hangzhou in December 2026 is the last World Tour event played to 21.
Domestic play. BWF’s note on the key changes under the system, published on 26 April 2026 (BWF news, “Key changes under the 3x15 scoring system”, bwfbadminton.com, 26 April 2026), says 3x21 remains an approved alternative that member associations, leagues and clubs may choose for domestic competition. In other words, your Tuesday league is not forced to change. Some associations are not waiting: Badminton Association of India switched its domestic ranking tournaments to 3x15 from July 2026 so its players would have a season of practice before the tour does.
Match length. A game to 15 has roughly 30 per cent fewer points than a game to 21, so matches get shorter and, more usefully, more predictable in length. That matters for hall bookings, for how many matches a club can fit into an evening, and for tournament organisers who can run tighter schedules.
How it plays. Leads are worth less than they feel. Under 3x21 a 5-2 start is a quarter of the game; under 3x15 it is a third, and 11-7 is already match-shape territory. Slow starters suffer. The interval at 8 arrives early enough that the “second half” of a game is only seven points for the leader, so the player who comes out of the break sharp has a real edge. Expect coaches to spend more time on the first three points of each game and on the serve-and-third-shot routine, because there are fewer rallies in which to recover from a bad patch.
Scoreboards and software. Flip scoreboards work fine. Electronic scoreboards, scoring apps and tournament software need the game-end logic updated: win at 15 with a two-point lead, hard stop at 21, interval at 8. Check yours before January.
How badminton scoring got here
Badminton has changed its scoring four times in 25 years, and rejected a change twice. The history explains why BWF pushed so hard for 3x15.
- 15-point sideout (to 2006). Only the serving side could score. Games went to 15 (women’s singles to 11), with “setting”, an optional extension, at 13-all and 14-all (9-all and 10-all in women’s singles) until setting at 13-all was dropped in 2002. Because you could only score on your own serve, a match had no predictable length.
- 7x5 trial (2002). Five games to 7 points, setting at 6-all. It was used at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and dropped the same year.
- 21-point rally point (2006). Trialled from December 2005, adopted by the International Badminton Federation in 2006 and used ever since: every rally scores, games to 21, two clear from 20-all, cap at 30.
- 11x5 trial (2014). Five games to 11 with no extension, tested at lower-level tournaments between August and November 2014.
- 2018 vote failed. At the AGM in Bangkok on 19 May 2018, 11x5 received 129 votes for and 123 against; it needed 168 (two-thirds), according to Badminton Asia.
- 2021 vote failed. At the virtual AGM on 22 May 2021, 11x5 polled 66.31 per cent, a fraction short of two-thirds (New Straits Times).
- 2024 to 2026. BWF Council dropped 11x5, endorsed 3x15 with setting to 21 on 9 November 2024, ran a year of trials, and took it to the vote on 25 April 2026 (New Straits Times report of the vote; Badminton Europe).
The lesson from 2018 and 2021 was that members would not accept five games or a system without an extension. 3x15 keeps the familiar shape of a best-of-three match and the two-point finish, and only shortens the game.
3x15 FAQ
Does the game really end at 21-20? Yes. At 20-all the next point wins. There is no 22-20.
Can a game finish 15-14? No. At 14-all you need a two-point lead, so the lowest winning score once it is 14-all is 16-14.
When is the interval? When the leading side first reaches 8. The break is up to 60 seconds.
When do we change ends in the third game? When the leading side first reaches 8 points, at the same time as the interval.
Does the serve change? No. Right side on an even score, left side on odd, same height rule, same faults.
Who serves first in the second game? The side that won the first game, as now.
Does my club have to switch? Not under BWF rules. 3x21 stays an approved alternative for domestic competition. Your national association or league decides, so ask before the first match of 2027.
When exactly does it start? Monday 4 January 2027, for all BWF-sanctioned play.
Is 3x15 already in the Laws? It has been in the Alternative Laws of Badminton for some years; the AGM vote makes it the standard. The amended Laws text is published by BWF under Statutes, Section 4.1.
What to do next
Play one club night to 15 before Christmas, score it strictly (two clear at 14-all, stop at 21, interval at 8), and notice how different a 7-4 lead feels. Then ask your league secretary which system you are playing in January.
